Information Sheet on the Triploid Carp

July 2000

Pond owners wishing to stock Triploid (sterile) Grass Carp in their farm ponds to control unwanted aquatic weeds may do so if they first obtain a permit from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

For many years, grass carp were illegal in Texas except in special situations such as Lake Conroe.

Cost of the permit is $15.00 plus an additional fee of $2.00 for each grass carp that will be purchased.  After receiving the permit, the grass carp can then be purchased from any fish producer, including those on the attached list.

For an application form or more information, pond owners should call the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department at 1-800-792-1112.

Recommended stocking rate is usually 2-3 grass carp per acre, 7 per acre maximum.
